������Ƶ University, Sierra Leone, 30th October 2024 – At the 2024 Academic Leadership Summit organized by eLearnAfricaLMS and the Association of African Universities, Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of ������Ƶ University underscored the University’s leadership in advancing digital education in Sierra Leone. As one of the nation’s top public institutions, ������Ƶ University is breaking new ground with online master’s programs aimed at broadening educational access. The summit, themed “Advancing Online Education through Innovative Curriculum Design for the Digital Era,” brought together academics, policymakers, and partners across Africa to explore the potential of digital learning.

According to Professor Bahiru Mohamed Koroma, the shift to online education gained momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting ������Ƶ to adopt flexible, remote learning methods. Recognizing online learning as essential, the University has equipped its Schools with digital tools to reach students wherever they are. “Online learning is a necessity,” stated Vice-Chancellor Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma. “We aim to make quality education accessible to students nationwide, regardless of location.”

“However, ������Ƶ faces challenges in online course delivery, including limited internet infrastructure and accessibility in remote areas. To bridge this “digital divide,” the University is collaborating with government agencies, UNESCO, and other development partners. Initiatives include digitizing course materials, deploying platforms like Moodle, and launching a Digital Skills Initiative to build ICT capacity among students and staff,” Professor Koroma disclosed

“Beyond digital learning, ������Ƶ is also focused on boosting its research capacity. The University is working to increase mentorship, foster gender inclusivity in research, and provide access to more resources, despite limited facilities and internet bandwidth. These efforts reflect ������Ƶ’s commitment to fostering a strong research culture and supporting equitable academic opportunities for its community,” VC&P averred.

The Academic Leadership Summit highlighted ������Ƶ University’s vision for a sustainable digital education model. Professor Koroma emphasized that partnerships and local capacity-building are essential to the long-term success of this transformation. By setting a standard for digital education, ������Ƶ University is paving the way for intellectual and personal growth across Sierra Leone.
